Freelancers in India lose money, time, and creative work every year because they operate on informal agreements or plain email threads. Why you need it: In India, under the Copyright Act 1957, the creator of a work owns the copyright by default — unless that copyright is explicitly assigned in writing. This means that if a client pays you to design a logo, write software, or produce photographs, you technically retain ownership of that work unless you sign an IP assignment.

Most clients expect to own the work they commissioned. Most freelancers assume the payment transfers ownership. Both assumptions are wrong without a written agreement.
