The difference between an experience letter and a relieving letter confuses almost every employee on their first exit from a company. Both are exit documents, both are issued by HR, and both are used during background verification. But they serve different purposes, they read differently, and they carry slightly different legal weight. What is an Experience Letter?
An experience letter, also called a work experience certificate or service certificate, is a formal document issued by an employer that certifies the period of employment, the job title held, and usually a brief line about conduct. Can One Document Serve Both Purposes?

Some Indian companies, especially large IT services firms, issue a single "experience cum relieving letter" that combines the facts of the relieving letter with the employment summary of the experience letter. This is accepted during background verification as long as the combined document clearly states both the period of employment and the effective relieving date.
